A report by an organization combating discrimination against women said on Monday that women own 25.6 percent of all real estate in Serbia.

According to report by the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) which was sent to the Serbian authorities  data from the Republic Geodetic Authority (RGZ) shows that women co-own just 0.3 percent of real estate in the country and are part owners in 12.8 percent of properties which have multiple owners. The data was collected by the SeConS Development Initiative Group and Mreze SOS Vojvodina for the report.

The report said that women in Serbia own 24.2 percent of land and 25.6 percent of buildings. They also own 40.4 percent of inherited properties and 36.3 percent of all properties acquired as a gift as well as 43.7 percent of purchased properties.

“Although Serbian laws on property and inheritance treat men and women equally, patriarchal customs allow men to dominate the real estate field, especially in rural areas,” the two organizations said in a press release.
