The director of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Serbia Marijan Ivanusa said on Wednesday that the epidemic situation in Israel and Serbia, the countries that implemented fast immunisation, deteriorated possibly due to peoples’ relaxation and tiredness.
“Maybe that happens because we are all tired from the epidemic and measures, while there is still a great number of people sensitive to the virus, and if we relax, the virus erupts fastly again. The existence of the vaccine is not the end but the beginning of an end. And when you are vaccinated, you are not immediately protected; it takes some time after the second dose for the immune response is built,” Ivanusa told K1 TV, as carried by Nova S.
According to him, the WHO estimated that a relatively high number of people would be vaccinated by the end of this and early next year, preventing a severe illness and many infected.
“That’s an optimistic expectation based on the number of available vaccines. So, let us not expect the pandemic end this year. We’ll have some hotspots in the areas where people won’t be protected by the vaccines next year.
The message is there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but we are not there yet,” Ivanusa said.
