Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that the decision about the 'Jadar' project by foreign investor Rio Tinto, which plans to exploit lithium in the river Jadar valley, will be passed in a referendum either at the national or regional level.

Vucic said that the people will have the final say on the project, adding that the protests against the investor are actually organised to threaten and insult him.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday at a highway construction site, he said that the opposition is interested in this topic “not because they started caring about the people but are concerned about their political positions.”

Vucic also announced that Chinese manufacturing company ‘Linglong Tire’ is expected to launch test production in Zrenjanin in November and should be fully operational as of March 2022.

Asked about the start of the production and the employment of Chinese workers, he said that what matters to him is that 1,000 workers from Serbia get jobs.

“Since when you (N1 reporters) got interested in the situation in which Chinese workers are doing their job. What matters to me is that Serbian workers get jobs, a thousand of them, and we will take care of checking the situation of Chinese workers,” he added.

The president also said no talks were held with the Socialist Party of Serbia about a joint presidential candidate for the upcoming elections, and that he believes the talks will take place next week.
