Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Friday accused Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison of abusing tennis player Novak Djokovic, giving the whole case another political twist.

Speaking in an Instagram video post, Vucic called Morrison to stop abusing Novak and the Djokovic family and the Serbian nation.

Tennis star Novak Djokovic was detained by Australian border authorities on Saturday morning Melbourne time, as per a court-ordered arrangement decided Friday, after meeting with Australian Border Force officials.

“We are facing many problems, pressure from parts of the world but what they have never managed to take away from us is our heart, pride and dignity. I am saying this because of everything that is happening in Melbourne and because I am interested in winning political points but because the attacks and pressure on Novak Djokovic, a citizen of Serbia, has reached the level at which it’s impossible for me not to say something,” Vucic said in the video post.

The Serbian president said he reacted only after the Australian Prime Minister welcomed the decision to revoke Djokovic’s visa. “I would probably not say a word if the Australian Prime Minister hadn’t welcomed the decision to revoke Djokovic’s visa for a second time. I am surprised by the fact that decisions like this can be taken by the executive authorities following court rulings. They have shown us what the independent judiciary is like there. I would go back to the moral issue here. If you wanted to ban Novak from winning the title for a 10th time, why didn’t you refuse him a visa right away and why didn’t you send him back right away,” Vucic said in the video.

According to Vucic, Serbia will continue fighitng for Djokovic “any decision in that regard will not alter the judgement of our people about the people of Australia or Novak Djokovic”.
