The disturbing reports on dire conditions in which Vietnamese lived and worked in a Chinese tire factory in northern Serbia were worrying and should be investigated deeply, a Green MP in the European Parliament (EP) Viola von Cramon told Nova S said late on Wednesday.

He added if the case involved human trafficking, the prosecution should have dealt with that.

Asked if she knew what was happening at the factory, Von Cramon recalled that a whistleblower revealed the details of the case.

She reminded that Serbia accepted the Convention Against Forced Labor of the ILO, and therefore was bound by it.

„So, it is up to the judiciary to deal with the issue. If it is forced labour, slavery in the Western Balkans, it is something tragic and we must try to stop it. I hope that the Government will take this seriously,“ Von Cramon said, adding that human and labour standards might be lower in Chinese companies but that it was up to the authorities to keep investments in line with European and national standards.

Commenting on the latest EC report on Serbia’s progress, Von Cramon said that the assessment the Government was in a privileged position in Brussels was correct to a certain extent about some things that the EU itself was against.

„Unfortunately, in writing, the European Commission (EC) report is quite negative and mentions some criteria that were not met, but in the end, the assessment changed everything, which does not make sense,“ she said.

Von Cramon added that the Commissioner for Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi’s idea was to put that in the report so that Serbia could open one or two clusters by the end of the year, and that was why she said: „Wait a minute, maybe not all is so rosy.“

Speaking about the EU’s mechanisms to correct that, she said that MEPs would try to find those „gaps, those political factors in the EP report“ and that some of her colleagues more or less shared the position. „But that would take time.“
