Viola von Cramon-Taubadel, an MEP, said on Monday she talked to the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), Bishop of Dusseldorf and All Germany Grigorije, a sharp critic of Serbia's regime, about common challenges and inter-religious dialogue in the Western Balkans and Germany, while the Bishop asked her help for the SPC monastery in Kosovo.

Von Cramon on Monday said: „Let’s use what unites us for the betterment of all.“

Later on Monday, the Diocese of Düsseldorf and Germany issued a statement saying that Bishop Grigorije „informed Ms von Cramon about the functioning of the Diocese of Dusseldorf and Germany and its numerous communities, challenges in achieving a better legal position of the Diocese, and engaging in interreligious dialogue within German society.“

The statement added that „during the meeting, Bishop Grigorije asked Ms von Cramon to work with fellow MEPs to get the interim authorities in Pristina to implement the 2016 ruling of its own Constitutional Court, bringing Visoki Decani back nearly 24 hectares of monastery land.“

According to a French media outlet, Bishop Grigorije is an open critic of Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic and his regime and a representative of the SPC progressive clerics who gained respect outside the believers’ circle.

„The bishop, with short grey hair and a neatly trimmed beard, was nicknamed ‘Orthodox George Clooney,’ but caused the Vucic’s regime dissatisfaction because he openly criticised his authoritarianism and everything he did to gain the church’s obedience,“ Le Courrier des Balkans wrote in February.
