US Ambassador: Create threat-free environment in Serbia

US Ambassador Anthony Godfrey said on Wednesday that the Serbian authorities should create an environment in which journalists and civil society organization leaders are not being threatened.

Godfrey, the other Quint ambassadors and European Union delegation chief Sem Fabrizi met with Prime Minister Ana Branbic.

“The Prime Minister informed us of Serbia’s efforts to make progress with reforms as part of the European integration process with focus on problems in rule of law,” the Ambassador wrote in a Facebook post after the meeting.

“The ambassadors expressed concern over the situation in the media and suggested that the government should work to create an environment in which no threats will be made against journalists and civil society organization leaders. We agreed on the importance of practical steps and that the implementation of the government media strategy is a good basis to improve the state of the media in Serbia,” he wrote.

Ambassador Godfrey wrote that Serbia’s partners appreciate the fact that they can meet regularly with the government to discuss important issues and help the country progress twoards integration into the EU.
