United Group files arbitration claim against Serbia

United Group (UG) said on Tuesday it, together with its two subsidiaries, had filed an arbitration claim against Serbia with the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) in Washington, D.C.

UG asserted that Serbia had breached several obligations under a bilateral investment treaty with the Netherlands – where the company is based – on the encouragement and reciprocal protection of investments between the two countries.

Beginning in 2014, United Group has been the target of a series of arbitrary, discriminatory measures taken by various Serbian authorities and entities as part of a widespread, orchestrated campaign to reduce the market presence of SBB, United Group’s operator in the country, and to promote the interests of the state-owned Telekom Serbia.

United Group filed the arbitration claim to protect the company’s investments in Serbia after the Government failed to respond to an earlier request to resolve the dispute amicably.

The parties will now appoint arbitrators and proceed with written submissions.
