On the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Non-Aligned Movement, António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, said on Monday the gathering in Belgrade was being held amid significant global challenges.

He added the Movement also had a significant role in the process of reducing the nuclear arsenal.

The Non-aligned Movement was formed in 1961 in Belgrade, at the initiative of the then leaders of Yugoslavia, Egypt, India, Indonesia and Ghana.

It now has 120 members and 17 observers.

Participants at the Belgrade two-day conference include one head of state, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo, and one prime minister Aymen Benabderrahmane of Algeria, among over 105 countries, nine international organisations and 40 foreign ministers.

The President of Azerbaijan and the Chairman of the Movement, Ilham Aliyev, said in a video link that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, refraining from acts of aggression and non-interference in the internal affairs of states were the core of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Sixty years on, Russia is among observer countries in the Movement, founded amid the Cold War, as a counterweight to the opposing blocs led by the then USSR and the US.

Also, Turkey, a NATO member state, sends its Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu as a special guest at the meeting.

Serbia’s Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic, the official host of the conference, said the EU full membership remained his country’s strategic goal. „Still, Belgrade would not give up its traditional friends such as Moscow, Beijing and the Non-aligned.“

Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic told the conference that „this is a gathering of non-aligned people after 60 years. And the opportunity for libertarian countries, which pursue their policies, cooperate and do not oppress anyone. Those who want to make a plan, a programme for the future, and cooperate much better.“
