N1 said on Friday that Telenor lawyers reacted to its report that the mobile services provider was demanding a temporary ban on its reporting saying that they only wanted a ban on what they claim is untrue information.

“Following the law suit filed by Telenor which demanded almost a million Euro in damages from N1 Program Director Jugoslav Cosic, portal Editor Nikola Stojic and the Adria News DOO company, the mobile services provider reacted because N1 said that Telenor’s demand for a temporary measure which would practically ban the publication of any information and comments on the planned deal between Telekom and Telenor is a harsh assault on freedom of the media to report on an issue of indubitable and great public importance,” N1 said.

“Telenor also reacted to the assessment that the amount of almost one million Euro which Telenor is demanding in damages shows the unequivocal intention of that company to intimidate and discourage journalists.

“Replying to that, Telenor lawyers said today that they did not request a ban on the publication of any information about Telenor from Jugoslav Cosic. The lawyers said that they requested a ban on what they said are the already published untrue information that Telenor is destroying freedom of the media to join with Telekom counter to the law on protecting the competition. They said that the law suit is a legal tool allowed by law, especially in a situation when, they said, the media are abusing their right to freedom of information and are publishing untrue information in the form of a campaign.

“The Telenor law suit is a struggle for truthful public information,” the Telenor lawyers said in a new letter to N1.
