Statistics Office reports a third more deaths in Q1 of 2021 compared to 2020

The Republic Statistics Office (RZS) said on Tuesday that 33.3 percent more people died in Serbia in the January-April 2021 period than in the same period a year earlier.

It said that 46,194 people died in that period of 2021 compared to 34,642 in 2020.

The RZS said that 1.4 percent fewer babies were born in the first quarter of 2021 than in the January-April period of 2020. It specified that 18,894 babies were born in that period of 2021 compared to 19,166 in 2020.

According to official data, 114,954 people died in Serbia in all of 2020 and 61,693 babies were born. Compared to 2019, the number of deaths rose in 2020 by 13.9 percent and the number of births by 2.8 percent.
