State Department official Derek Chollet said on Tuesday that he told Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti that Serbs should be able to vote at the April 3 elections.

“Had a good conversation with Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti… stressed the importance of ensuring eligible voters in Kosovo are able to participate in the upcoming April 3 Serbian national elections,” the counselor at the Department of State wrote in a Twitter post.

The Kosovo authorities initially opposed voting at the Serbian presidential and parliamentary elections but following calls from the international community decided to take the issue under consideration. On Monday, ruling Vetevendosje party MP group chief Mimoza Kusari Lila said that the Serbian authorities had not made any official request to organize the vote.

Prime Minister Kurti said later in the day that his cabinet is working with Quinta and European Union ambassadors to find a solution for the Serbian elections but added that any decision should not violate Kosovo’s statehood and constitution.
