Following the four-hour meeting with French President Emanuel Macron in Paris on Monday, Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic said they mostly talked about the relations between Belgrade and Pristina, adding he believed France would "seriously support" "Serbia on its European path.
He said the bilateral relations and specific projects, such as Belgrade underground were also discussed, and that Serbia planned to start the construction works of the first line by the end of the year.
„The visit was great, Macron is coming to Serbia in September or October, and it will be a big event. Many contracts will be signed,“ Vucic said.
He added the bilateral relations and concrete projects were also discussed. According to him, the exchange with France during 2019 was two and a half times higher than in 2010.
Vucic told TV Pink the meeting was the proof of the French president’s true friendship towards Serbia and commitment to solving the problems in the Western Balkans.
„I am happy that President Macron understands Serbia’s needs, the weight of Serbia’s position. I hope and believe that we can do a lot together. I think we showed incredible cordiality. I experienced things I never dreamed of. President Macron took me to the wine cellar of the Elysee Palace, which I think not only no one from the Balkans but also from Europe had the opportunity to see,“ Vucic told the TV.
He added the two mainly talked about the relations between Belgrade and Pristina.
„We linked it with Serbia’s European path. I believe we will have the support of France on the European path,“ Vucic said, adding he also believed that there would be changes and new approaches because „we accepted the change in methodology.“
Vucic said he expected some new issues to be opened by the end of the year.
In 2020, the EU did not open any chapter with Serbia because rhe lack of progress in the rule of law and media freedom.
Vucic recalled that in line with the new accession methodology, the chapters would be grouped by clusters and said he believed more chapters could be opened in one year than in the previous four years.
„We talked about the underground and we think that by the end of the year we will start the construction works on that first line,“ Vucic said.
Regarding the dialogue with Kosovo, Vucic said he respected the European Union envoy Miroslav Lajčák but added that „two are needed for the negotiations.“
„I believe Macron will have an important role,“ Vucic said, referring to the Belgrade – Pristina dialogue on the normalisation of relations.
