The ruling coalition of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), together with some opposition and right-wing political organisations who rejected the mediation of the European Parliament (EP) in the inter-party dialogue to improve the election conditions ahead of April vote, signed on Friday an agreement regulating the issue.

The Parliament Speaker Ivica Dacic described the agreement made in a parallel dialogue, „which did not completely satisfy everyone,“ as a significant shift in improving the election conditions with „realistic, achievable and sustainable solutions.“

And, he said, the agreement could not give „an alibi for slamming and accusing Serbia.“

The key points of the agreement tackle the election process, submitting election lists, control of voter lists, financing of campaigns and media.

It remains unclear what effect the agreement would have on the suggestions drafted by the MEPs, who facilitated the inter-party dialogue in which some opposition parties took part.

Especially after the main regime’s opponents, most of whom boycotted the 2020 general vote after the then MEPs mission failed, left the dialogue with MEPs, accusing them of siding with President Aleksandar Vucic, suggesting a compromise which would not create conditions for free and fair elections.

MEP rejected the accusations.

Some opposition leaders said the MEP’s suggestions were cosmetic and did not secure the realisation of the proposals since it depended on the institutions run by the authorities.
