Vojislav Seselj, decades-long head of the ultra-nationalist Serbian Radical Party (SRS) said on Friday he stepped down as its leader but did not confirm it meant his withdrawal from politics nova.rs reported on Friday.

„Reports are true, and I don’t want to comment further,” the convicted war criminal told nova.rs.

Asked if that means his withdrawal from politics, Seselj says, “Who says from politics?”

„I’m stepping down as the party leader. I can deal with politics as an individual as long as I live, but not on behalf of the party,” he said.

SRS did poorly in Sunday’s election failing to cross the three percent threshold for the country’s Parliament.

Seselj is considered a political father of Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic who left SRS to form his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in 2008.

In April 2018, the Appellate Chamber of the former International Tribunal in The Hague found Seselj guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
However, since he spent 11 and a half years in the custody of the Hague Tribunal during the marathon trial, he would not have to serve his sentence.

The Appellate Chamber reversed the first-instance verdict from March 2016, which acquitted Seselj of all charges.
