Savo Manojlovic of the 'Go-Change' initiative told N1 on Thursday they started collecting signatures across Serbia demanding the ban on lithium and boron excavation, but the verifiers in the northern city of Novi Sad were suddenly ordered to withdraw from four places where the signing took place.

„Our goal is 30,000 signatures… I believe we will collect more,“ Manojlovic said.

He added they „call on all local authorities to act as they should and be at the service of people.“

However, in the northern city of Novi Sad, the verifiers were suddenly ordered to other jobs from three places an hour and a half after the signing started, despite the previous permit issued by the city authorities. In the fourth place, it didn’t start since the verifier was withdrawn before, the 021.rs website reported.

Manojlovic said the initiative would not organise more camping outside the Presidency seat and that the tent used for that in the past would now serve as a point for collecting signatures.

The Anglo-Australian Rio Tinto company’s plan to mine lithium in western Serbia triggered environmentalist protests across the country and the Government said it ended all contracts with Rio Tinto. Still, the activists demanded a total ban on lithium and boron excavation to that and other mining companies which might plan to come to Serbia.
