The head of Serbia’s top civilian security agency (BIA) told reporters on Wednesday that it was engaged on all problems threatening security.

“The BIA is engaged on all problems which could in any way jeopardize the security and stability of the citizens,” Bratislav Gasic said. Gasic is a high-ranking official of President Aleksandar Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). He was attending a ceremony to present housing to security service personnel in Novi Sad.

President Vucic said on several occasions that the BIA would investigate problems such as the breakdowns in a major power plant, wheat missing from the country’s good reserves and more recently the shortage of sugar in retail outlets.

Gasic told an N1 reporter that questions to him should be addressed through the BIA. He said the agency does not publish reports on topical issues that it investigated because “it is not the police in the convention sense and does not publish reports”. “I am doing my job with a maximum of professionalism and am trying to help President Vucic from my position,” he said.
