President Aleksandar Vucic kicked of his Serbian Progressive Party’s (SNS) election campaign in a Belgrade suburb on Tuesday evening, helping rally support for the party election ticket.

“I promise to continue trying and, together with you, changing and preserving our Serbia,” Vucic said at the gathering in the Borca suburb after signing his support to the SNS Aleksandar Vucic – Together We Can Do Everything list of candidates for the April 3 parliamentary and Belgrade City Assembly elections.

Vucic also visited Belgrade’s Zemun municipality where the pro-regime Vecernje Novosti daily claimed on its portal that “a river of people” greeted him with applause and flags. Zemun was a stronghold of Vucic’s former Serbian Radical Party (SRS) in the 1990s before he left to form the SNS with former Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic. The daily’s portal said that “the president was in a visibly good mood, politely offering his hand to everyone”.

Serbian Prime Minister and ranking SNS official Ana Brnabic attended a similar gathering in the central Vracar municipality which is viewed as being an opposition stronghold. SNS officials kicked off the campaign in a number of other places across the country.
