Serbian Parliament Speaker Ivica Dacic tried to discredit the environmental protests announced for Saturday by saying that they are receiving foreign support.

According to Dacic, the protests are getting “logistic and financial support from abroad”. Dacic’s Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and other nationalist parties, including the parties of the ruling coalition, have been using allegations of foreign support and financing against their opponents since the 1990s as a way to discredit them in public.

Dacic told the pro-government TV B92 that the protesters including people who are not environmental activists, claiming that some politicians are using people who are genuinely concerned about the environment. “I am convinced that 99 percent of the protest organizers have no idea about ecology,” Dacic said.

He added that a large number of the protesters are opponents of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and are not there because of the environment.
