The Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) Synod did not ban the clergy from engaging in politics, but warned that any participation in party competitions, giving statements in favour or to the detriment of certain parties or candidates in the election process is inadmissible, the SPC information service said.

The statement also adds that the video showing the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church Porfirije with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is not part of the Serbian Progressive Party’s election video, noting that the media that announced that the clergy were banned from politics are „ill-intentioned“.

The information service of the Serbian Orthodox Church stated that one decision of the Holy Synod of Bishops, addressed and intended exclusively for diocesan archbishops, „magically dawned on the pages of those media for which designing and creating divisions in the Serbian Orthodox Church is part of the programming and editorial policy.“

„Although the concrete decision does not contain anything that is not covered by the canons and the Constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and its items are a constant, almost centuries-old practice of the Orthodox Church, the relevant media thought it a good opportunity to try to revive a clinically dead narrative and the conservative Holy Synod, which threatens the human, political and civil rights of young, modern, beautiful priests, who are ready to modernize the Church beyond recognition, and to open it to the world,“ the statement said.
