The Serbian Orthodox Church is marking Good Friday with special church services instead of mass and the reading of parts of the gospel and no ringing of church bells until Easter.
Fasting is part of the Good Friday tradition among Serbian Orthodox faithful and Easter eggs are dyed a traditional red to symbolize the blood of Christ. There is also no singing and no celebrations from Thursday to Easter Sunday.
The Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates Easter on May 2 this year. The date is calculated every year as do the Catholic and Protestant churches with the date coinciding in some years.
Good Friday and Easter Sunday are national holidays in Serbia.
