The Serbian MP who initiated a petition to protect President Aleksandar Vucic from what he says is a media campaign by political and interest groups told N1 that he wanted to protect the institution of the president as well as the man.

Serb League leader Aleksandar Djurdjev MP said that the petition was initiated by his Institute for Political Networking which calls itself a patriotic NGO. Djurdjev won a seat in the Vojvodina Assembly on the Aleksandar Vucic – For Our Children ticket. His Serb League declares itself a patriotic, conservative party.

Djurdjev said that media war against the Serbian President was being waged by people advocating the independence of Kosovo, the abolishing of the Republika Srpska (the Serb entity in Bosnia-Herzegovina) and people who don’t like the war against the Mafia and crime proclaimed by Vucic. “We are not prosecutors or judges ruling who the interest groups are,” he said and added that more than 500 people signed the petition in less than 24 hours, including Parliament Speaker Ivica Dacic, Health Minister Zlatibor Loncar, singer Aca Lukas who declared himself a staunch supporter of the president.

He said the statements by crime boss Veljko Belivuk of links to the authorities including the president were “media manipulation… and shameless laying of blame at the feet of the president for crimes committed by an indicted group” and added that those were not the main reasons for the petition. “This is an attempt to raise the voice of the public against an injustice who foreign and internal interest groups and centers of political power are waging against one man,” he said. Djurdjev recalled that his organization launched a petition to protect the Republika Srpska from the international community efforts to lay the stigma of genocide on it.
