The Independent Journalists Association of Serbia (NUNS) on Tuesday condemned recent attacks on several journalists working for independent media outlets.

A statement said that NUNS “sharply condemns the targeting and insults of Newsmax Adria journalist Jasmina Dobrilovic and fellow journalists at Danas daily and the Zig Info portal who were subjected to continued attacks, demeaning and insults by public officials over the past week”.

It recalled that Health Minister Zlatibor Loncar engaged in a verbal assault on a reporter at the opening of a new COVID hospital in Novi Sad and that staff at Zig Info were subjected to groundless accusations by the local authorities in the Grocka municipality for reporting that a journalist with a pro-regime TV was being paid as an advisor to the municipal mayor.

It said that Prime Minister Ana Brnabic called Danas journalists “eloquent liars” in a September 2 post on her Twitter account and joined President Aleksandar Vucic the previous evening in calling some media outlets their political opponents.

“The authorities are obliged to answer questions from journalists since their profession can’t and must not be in the service of political bargaining or for pre-election clashes with political rival and no one, especially the authorities, should treat our colleagues in that way,” the NUNS statement said adding that all attacks will be entered into data bases of assaults on journalists.
