The Serbian Defense Ministry said that Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic took part in ceremony with Patriarch Porfirije at the Mileseva monastery.
“Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, has taken part in the ceremony welcoming His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Porfirije to the Mileševa Monastery near Prijepolje, before tomorrow’s celebration of the 425th anniversary of the burning of Saint Sava’s relics,” the Defense Ministry press release said.
The SPC press release said that the Patriarch arrived at the Mileseva monastery and was met by Bishop Atansije and the faithful from the town of Prijepolje along with a number of the clergy, Stefanovic and members of the Serbian military. The Mileseva monastery was the resting place of St Sava, the first archbishop of what became the SPC before the Ottoman Turk authorities had the remains burned in Belgrade’s Vracar hill. The Serbian military airlifted a large cross to the peaks overlooking the monastery in October 2021.
Nebojsa Stefanovic was alleged to have fallen foul of President Aleksandar Vucic when a wire-tapping scandal broke out involving his associates at the Internal Affairs Ministry (MUP). Stefanovic was transferred to the Defense Ministry and kept a low profile for months. He has been making an increasing number of public appearances over the past few weeks.
