The Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences (SANU) marked the 180th anniversary of its library on Tuesday.

Culture and Information Minister Maja Gojkovic told the ceremony that the library is one of few institutions with a history that long. “It houses some of the most valuable and oldest manuscripts in this area,” she said adding that it has the biggest collection of foreign books in Serbia including two incunables printed in Venice in the second half of the 15th century.

The SANU library was initially set up by the Society of Serb Reason in November 1841 and opened on June 14 1842. It has some 1.5 million volumes and a collection of some 10,000 photographs.
