Aleksandar Mitrovic's 90th-minute header left Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal shocked in a 2-1 win for Serbia in Lisbon, giving Serbia an automatic qualifying spot at the World Cup in Qatar and sending Portugal in playoffs next March, while a Rissian defender helped Croatia qualifying by scoring own-goal.

Serbia managed to get back after Renato Sanches scored the opening goal after just two minutes. Dusan Tadic equalised before the end of the first half in the 33rd minute.

Nicknamed Mitrogoal for being the best team’s scorer, silenced the crowd and shocked Portugal’s players with a late header.

„It was an amazing game, fully deserved,“ Mitrovic said.

Soon after the game, people across the country flooded the streets to celebrate. Some said they didn’t expect the win, which was the only result Serbia had to achieve to qualify. Portugal would have done it even with a draw, thanks to a better goal difference.

The runners-up from the 2018 World Cup, Croatia qualified after a Russian defender scored an own-goal for 1-0  in the Adriatic city of Split ten minutes before the final whistle in an equally dramatic game.

The Russians also needed a draw to verify a ticket for Qatar.
