Serbian Parliament Speaker Ivica Dacic on Tuesday called a referendum on changes to the constitution for January 16 next year after MPs adopted the draft amendments.

Dacic said that voters will be asked whether they want to confirm the changes to the Serbian constitution.

“Because of all the lies that have been published in recent months, I want to say that the referendum has nothing to do with the preamble. Our stand is completely clear – Kosovo and Metohija is an integral part of Serbia – nor with various other issues which are being made political and are used to brutally violate the law and constitution when it comes to protests and road blocks,” he said adding that the amendments are only about the judiciary and rule of law.

The preamble to the Serbian constitution states that Kosovo is an integral part of Serbia.

He said that if the amendments are approved at the referendum “it will be a big step forward on Serbia’s road to the European Union and in terms of the reforms being implemented”.
