The ambassadors of the so-called Quinta countries demanded the de-escalation of the crisis in north Kosovo in their meeting with Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic on Monday.

His office said in a statement that the President explained Serbia’s position to the ambassadors of the US, UK, France, Italy and Germany and the head of the European Union Delegation in Serbia, Emanuele Giaufret, saying Belgrade remained committed to preserving peace and honouring the Brussels Agreement.

However, he added, “by no means will we allow the humiliation of Serbia and its people,” Vucic said.

The statement did not cite any of the ambassadors.

Earlier, Radio Free Europe said that Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Gabriel Escobar is due in Brussels next week to discuss the situation in Kosovo with European Union officials. Escobar took over from Matthew Palmer as the senior State Department envoy for Kosovo in August.

During the eight-day of the stalemate on two crossings between Kosovo and Serbia, NATO-led KFOR soldiers appeared near Jarinje line where the Serbs from northern Kosovo had been blocking the roads after Pristina special police came to oversee the Government’s decision to implement a reciprocal measure demanding temporary licence plates for vehicles crossing from Serbia.

Late on Sunday, Vucic told local Belgrade media he gave NATO 24 hours to react if violence breaks out against Serbs in Kosovo, but added that Serbia wants to resolve the situation peacefully.
