Police arrest migrant over suspicion of participating in Saturday clash

The police in Subotica, the northernmost city of Serbia, not far from the border with Hungary, arrested a 26-year-old Afghan citizen over the suspicion that he participated in the conflict among the migrants on Saturday which left one dead.

According to the statement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Serbia, the arrested migrant is suspected of participating in the conflict between two groups of migrants in the forest area near the Hungarian border on Saturday morning, in which six people were injured, while one was killed.

The suspect was detained for the period of up to 48 hours and, along with a criminal complaint, he will be brought to the High Public Prosecutor’s Office in Subotica, while the police will continue further work on identifying other persons who tok part in the conflict.

Clash among migrants in northern Serbia leaves one dead

The armed was reported on Saturday morning. One migrant succumbed to his injuries, and among those injured is a sixteen-year-old girl, whose life is still in jeopardy.

Vladimir Cucic of the the Commissariat for Refugees and Migrations told N1 that they do not know what caused the clash and that it would be irresponsible to speculate it was about smuggling or any other cause of the conflict, adding that the police investigation is pending.

The ministry said on Saturday that there are no Serbian citizens among the injured. However, Sasa Dragojlo, a BIRN journalist who covers the news on migrants, told N1 that he had information that some Serbian policemen were also injured yesterday. The ministry has not confirmed the information.
