Dragan Milovanovic Crni, a protester who managed to stop an excavator with members of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) as it attempted to run through a group of protesters on Saturday in Sabac, was ordered into custody for 48 hours, Nova.rs reported.

The incident took place during mass protests in Serbia over recently adopted laws on referendum and expropriation of property, which critics say was tailored to favour the company Rio Tinto, which plans to extract lithium in western Serbia.

A video emerged showing SNS members trying to pass through a group of people with an excavator.

The protesters tried to stop the excavator, but the driver decided to continue forward. Milanovic then climbed on the machine and physically stopped him.

Nova.rs reported that the excavator was driven by Nebojsa Stojicevic Jarin, an SNS member from Sabac. In a statement for Nova.rs, Dusan Kostadinovic, the Secretary General of the Democratic Party who was present at the scene, said that armed criminals were accompanying the excavator and beating protesters.

It is not clear yet whether the driver and the members of the SNS who attacked the protesters have been detained or arrested.
