US diplomat Matthew Palmer told Pristina-based RTV21 that he doesn’t think Pristina’s possible genocide law suit against Serbia will help solve disputes between the two.

He said that there have to be grounds for the law suit and that has to be resolved before the law suit is filed. “It’s complicated,” he said and added that it’s up to Kosovo to decide if the law suit should go ahead.

Palmer said that the US would like to see Belgrade and Pristina as well as the rest of the region focused more on the future than on the past. According to the State Department official, Kosovo should find things it has in common with Serbia, reach an agreement to normalize relations and look for ways to move the process forward.

He said that a normalization of relations opens the road to the European Union for both Kosovo and Serbia.

He said that all the agreements reached in Brussels have to be implemented including the Community of Serb Municipalities which Kosovo agreed on. Palmer said that he is sure that there is some mechanism to allow the forming of the Community in line with the Kosovo Constitution.
