NUNS on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the pressure on N1's journalist Jelena Zoric, after Svetislav Bojic, a lawyer for Predrag Koluvija, the main defendant in the case of marijuna and skank production at 'Jovanjica' plant, filed criminal charges against her.
The charges followed N1’s request to the Belgrade Bar association to launch a disciplinary procedure because of the way Bojic addressed the journalist, conveying Koluvija’s greetings to her, claiming that whoever resented him did not do well.
NUNS also recalled Serbia’s long history of intimidating and blackmailing journalists by various criminal organisations and their envoys, which sometimes ended in a loss of life.
„We remind all authorities in Serbia of the Council’s recommendations Europe (Recommendation CM / Rec (2016) 41) which, inter alia, appeals to member states to be careful and ensure that regulations and sanctions do not apply discriminatory or arbitrary to journalists or other media people,“ NUNS said.
NUNS believes the criminal report filed against Zoric is an example of superficial or malicious use of the law to exert additional pressure on her because of the work the public interest.
„We demand that the persecution of Jelena Zoric stops immediately. She received NUNS annual award for ethics and courage ‘Dusan Bogavac’, the UNS award ‘Aleksandar Tijanic,’ as well as the charter of the Serbian Philanthropic Forum for the extremely professional reporting in 2020,“ NUNS added, calling for unequivocal support of Zoric for her hard work and struggle for the truth.
„We will continue to provide her with all the necessary support to continue her unhindered professional report as she has been doing so far,“ NUNS added.
