The Belgrade Natural History Museum said on Monday that lesser horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus Hipposideros) had been found in Serbia’s northern province of Vojvodina for the first time.

The bat colony was found in a cave outside the city of Vrsac, the museum said adding that its researchers registered two male bats. This type of bat was never registered in Vojvodina or other parts of Serbia bordering Vojvodina but is present in areas south of the Sava and Danube rivers.

Museum experts believe that the bats came from the southern Carpathian mountains in neighboring Romania and found shelter in the only adequate cave in the Vrsac mountains. The museum monitors bats across Serbia as part of the Ecological Network project led by the Belgrade University Biology Faculty.
