Fiat workers said that negotiations held Monday with the government working group, Serbian Development Agency and City of Kragujevac representatives are “in a stalemate”.

The Stellantis company, which took over the Fiat car maker in Kragujevac, is to manufacture electric cars at the Fiat plant in late 2024. The company management decided that 1,541 of the Fiat plant’s 2,016 employees are surplus staff, offering them two-year contracts for jobs abroad or redundancy

pay.

“I cannot say that negotiations are at a standstill, but they are in a kind of a stalemate,” working group member and head of the Fiat Kragujevac Independent Union Sadja Djordjevic told press following the meeting, adding that the employees basically have two more days to say whether or not they want to go abroad. “No matter how much progress there is from the employer, two days is very little time,” said Djordjevic.

Even though Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic assured the workers that there would be six protected groups of employees, only three groups have been protected to date.

The workers said that they need to have the information on the severance pay by Thursday.

Government representatives in the working group did not issue any statements following the Monday meeting.
Negotiations are to continue on Wednesday in Belgrade.
