More than 40,000 migrants have transited Serbia this year, a senior official of the Refugee and Migrations Commissariat said on Monday.

Commissariat Regional Coordinator Slobodan Savovic said that some 42,000 migrants had gone through Serbia this year and added that some 1.5 million passed through the country since that start of the migrant crisis in 2015. Savovic said that 12 of the country’s 19 refugee centers were open at present.

“There are between 4,000 and 5,000 migrants in those centers, most of them from Syria, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. We’re waiting to see if the Afghan crisi will increase their numbers,” he told the opening of a photography exhibition in the southern city of Nis. The exhibition comes after a photography course for migrants at the center in Presevo and a group of Nis University students.
