MEPs mediating meeting between Serbian authorities and opposition

The Serbian authorities and opposition started their first meeting on election conditions mediated by European Parliament officials at the Serbia Palace in Belgrade on Friday.

The meeting behind closed door with Chatham House rules in place is part of the inter-party dialogue which was launched in 2019 to discuss and possibly reach an agreement on improving conditions for elections in Serbia. Friday’s meeting is being mediated by current MEPs Tanja Fajon and Vladimir Bilcik and former MEP Knut Fleckenstein.

Present at the meeting are People’s Party leader Vuk Jeremic, Democratic Party leader Zoran Lutovac, Social Democrat Party leader Boris Tadic, League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina leader Nenad Canak and officials from the Party of Freedom and Justice, Movement of Free Citizens, Together for Serbia, Don’t let Belgrade D(r)own Initiative, Nova Party and Justice and Reconciliation Party.

The ruling Serbian Progressive Party is represented by senior party official Vladimir Orlic.

Earlier the European Parliament delegation met separately with President Aleksandar Vucic Parliament Speaker Ivica Dacic.
