European Union envoy Miroslav Lajcak said on Friday that chief negotiators from Belgrade and Pristina agreed to continue talks on license plates in mid-May.

“I am glad to announce that after my consultations with the two Chief negotiators yesterday and today, we agreed to continue our discussions on finding a permanent solution for the licence plates issue in Brussels on 13 May,” Lajcak said in a Twitter post.

Tensions rose in September 2021 when the authorities in Pristina decided to ban entry into Kosovo for vehicles with Serbia license plates. The problem was temporarily resolved by using white stickers to cover the state insignia on Serbia and Kosovo plates. The problem was supposed to be solved within six months but the April 21 deadline expired with a solution.

Belgrade and Pristina disagreed on whether the temporary agreement would remain in place or not.
