The Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament on Friday called for an end to claims that the Serbian opposition was linked to organized crime.
Serbian state officials have been claiming that the opposition is linked to an organized crime group headed by Veljko Belivuk who told prosecutors that he had close ties to President Aleksandar Vucic and his associates. Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and several of her cabinet ministers have claimed that his defense was something that the opposition and tycoons affiliated with them came up with in an attempt to topple the president.
The Socialists and Democrats group quoted MEP Demetris Papadakis who said that “linking Serbian opposition politicians with organized crime, without giving evidence and a chance to respond, must stop”.
The tweet recalled that the inter-party dialogue between the Serbian authorities and opposition mediated by European Parliament officials is meant to normalize political relations and improve media freedom.
