Parliament Speaker Ivica Dacic said on Monday that the Serbian electorate very convincingly lent its support to pro-European parties.

A parliament press release quoted Dacic as telling a meeting of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Crete that the voters gave their very convincing support to the political forces engaged on European integration and who have placed that goal on the list of their political and social priorities.

He added that there is hesitation among the people of Serbia about membership in the European Union as a realistic goal because the accession talks have been ongoing for 19 years. He warned that accession fatigue is present in other Western Balkan countries as well.

Dacic said that the “crisis caused by Russia’s armed intervention in Ukraine” is slowing down the integration of the region into the EU. “I am calling the Council of Europe (CoE) and all its members to strongly support our European integration efforts since we are deeply convinced that this is the only way to achieve full stability and prosperity for our region and each individual country,” he said.

The PACE Committee is meeting in the city of Khania for a two-day session on topical issues including the Western Balkans and Kosovo following Pristina’s application for CoE membership last week.
