Serbia’s Interior Ministry (MUP) and Prosecutors’ Office for Organised Crime brought criminal charges against two former MUP officials, the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, BIRN, said on Friday.

Dijana Hrkalovic, former state secretary in MUP, is suspected of influence peddling, while Dejan Milenkovic, former head of the Special Investigative Methods service, is charged with abuse of office.

She was taken into custody earlier on Friday and the police searched her apartment. Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic later said she was suspected in a murder case from 2017 when the main suspect was released after someone tampered with evidence.

Vucic said that „someone from the police spoke out and that led to the arrest.“

Milenkovic was questioned by the police, while Hrkalovic answered to the prosecutors for organised crime and was ordered 30-day in detention.

Also on Friday, sources from MUP confirmed to Nova.rs that a high-ranked police officer who discovered the Jovanjica marijuana plantation and confiscated over four tonnes of the illegal plant was temporarily moved to another job.
