Confusing signals regarding anti-epidemic measures in Serbia

While Serbia's chief epidemiologist and a member of the state anti-epidemic Crisis Team Predrag Kon maintains the situation is still dangerous, the most outspoken advocate of the relaxation of the existing preventive measures, Belgrade Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic, announces the reopening of shopping malls.

Kon said on Wednesday that „right now, the medical part of Crisis Team is preventing further relaxation of the measures,“ adding „it would be tragic to make a mistake due to lack of patience.“

He said the two weeks after the closure of shopping malls and caterings, „the effects are clearly seen,“ but warned that their further easing should not happen „as long as the COVID-19 hospitals are full and before we see the rise in discharged patients.“

But Vesic announced late on Tuesday, he expected the reopening of shopping malls „if not on Wednesday, then soon,“ adding that was decided at the Crisis Team meeting on Friday.

He added he would meet the people working in the event industry to discuss allowing gatherings, weddings with up to 50 people, congresses and concerts.

In the last weeks, the number of infected and dead hasn’t shown a severe decline in Serbia partly due to new virus strains and a strong anti-vaxxers’ campaign in the country, despite the mass vaccination since January,
