The Chinese Linglong tire factory in northern Serbia bought 2.8 hectares of construction land for some 120,000 euros (14 million dinars) to build five residential buildings with 300 apartments, including accommodation for the company's workers, media reported on Monday.

The purchase came to a couple of months after reports about inhumane conditions in which Linglong kept its employees, particularly a group of workers from Vietnam.

The Mayor of the northern Zrenjanin town, Sima Salapura, said „the investment leads to the construction of accompanying facilities, such as new trade facilities, business premises of other purposes, children’s playgrounds, etc. It enables new employment and generally changes the economic picture of the environment.“

The land for the residential area borders the future Zrenjanin – Belgrade – Novi Sad (the capital of the Vojvodina province) motorway, close to Linglong’s premises.

The factory was the target of the media criticism, including the New York Times, which published a story on Saturday under the ‘Miserable and Dangerous’: A Failed Chinese Promise in Serbia’ headline.

The European Union has often warned Serbia about its increasing political and economic ties with Russia and China, reiterating that the harmonisation with the bloc’s foreign policy, in general, is one of the critical conditions for joining the Union.

Belgrade maintains that obligation comes at the end of the road to the EU.
