European Parliament member Vladimir Bilcik told a media conference following a Citizens’ Assembly in the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica that Montenegro does not have a legitimate Government.

The Government has lost legitimacy. There is no confidence in the Government and certain decisions need to be made. Montenegro needs a political government and the current situation must lead to new elections, the Montenegrin state TV (RTCG) quoted Bilcik as saying.

Asked about his view on the adoption of amendments to the Law on the President of the Republic, which Montenegrin civic organizations criticized by saying they restrict the President’s powers and violate the Constitution, Bilcik said the answer to this should be sought in Montenegro.

Europe is carefully monitoring the developments and we express our concern, which means that the situation is very serious and this issue has to do with Montenegro’s capacity to deal with problems, said Bilcik, adding that the answers must be found within the framework of the Constitution, no matter how imperfect it may be.

Bilcik told the Citizens’ Assembly that these are difficult times for everyone in Europe, so for Montenegro as well, which is all the more reason why work needs to be done on the projects demonstrating that democracy and citizen participation make a difference.

Bilcik said he was very concerned about the situation in Montenegro because its constitutional, political and economic foundations are threatened and called into question and because it is important to engage citizens. I want to encourage you to overcome this crisis, and European institutions are watching you, stressed Bilcik.

He said that Montenegro has made a choice, and that is the path to the European Union, and added that this will only be possible through hard work.

On behalf of the @Europarl_EN, I’m here for the Citizens' Assembly special meeting in the @SkupstinaCG 🇲🇪🇪🇺.
