Serbian Internal Affairs Minister Aleksandar Vulin said on Tuesday that the police arrested what he claims is one of the most notorious criminals in Serbia and the Republika Srpska, identifying him only by the initials DE.

He said that the arrest of the 40 year old man is proof that the biggest criminals would be the first to go in the fight against the Mafia. “The arrest of DE is proof that no one is under protection and no one is above the law or the state,” the minister said.

Vulin said that the police arrested DE under a warrant from the Belgrade Higher Court Special Section, adding that DE committed the most serious crimes a number of times as a repeat offender. DE was arrested and sentenced to nine years in prison by the Higher Court in 2011 for five separate crimes, including extortion and drug trafficking.

The minister said that DE also organized a criminal group which smuggled drugs from Montenegro and that he is linked to murders.

Media reports identified the arrested man as Darko Elez who is suspected of having committed murder, extortion and weapons and cigarette smuggling.
