In its study on mid-term coronavirus effects on the prison population, the Council of Europe (CoE) said Serbia was among those countries which reduced that population rate.

The study carried for the CoE by the University in Lausanne, said Serbia reduced the prison population by four percent, partly due to the wardens’ decision to release some prisoners as a preventive measure from the coronavirus spreading.

The countries like Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Norway, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom, have released a total of 143,000 inmates from March to September.

The study also showed that from January 1 to September 15, an average imprisonment rate fell by 4.6 percent, from 121.4 to 115.8 prisoners per 100,000 people, in 35 prisons covered by the research.
