The Center for Local Self-Government (CLS) said on Wednesday that the Belgrade city authorities raised garbage collection fees by 17 percent with no explanation given.
“According to CLS estimates, this means an additional 700,000 Euro a month from the pockets of the citizens to the city budget. We are asking the city authorities why they raised the fees, bearing in mind that the cost of the service was raised by 10 percent last year,” a press release said. It also asked if this was the start of payment for a waste incineration plant in the Vinca suburb “which the city authorities claimed would cost the public nothing”.
The CLS said that city officials have said nothing about the prices of communal services but have always tried to keep this type of vital information under the radar.
