The European Commission is regularly monitoring the situation in Serbia in regard to rule of law, including freedom of the media, Commission spokeswoman Ana Pisonero said on Friday.

She called the Serbian authorities to launch a dialogue with all political players in the country so that important reforms can be continued.

As a country negotiating European Union membership, Serbia is being monitored for rule of law, including freedom of the media and the issue is raised with the authorities, she said.

She said that the EU is encouraging the country’s new parliament to continue the inter-party diaologue led by the European Parliament to reach a wide consensus on reforms linked to accession to the EU and added that the European Commission encourages the Serbian leadership to engage in that dialogue.

Pisonero confirmed that the EU had received a letter from Serbian opposition parties which the Commission would respond to.
