Opposition leader remains in power in Serbia’s western municipality

Cajetina, a municipality in western Serbia, the only confirmed opposition-held local district in the country, formed new the municipal authorities after June 21 general and local elections, with Milan Stamatovic as the head, the Beta news agency reported on Friday.

 His opposition list ‘Healthy (Serbia) to Win’ has won 61 pecent of the votes and is the first in Serbia to form the authorities at any level.

Serbia’s Electoral Commission failed to publish the final results of the June 21 vote which had to be repeated last Sunday at  234 polling stations due to irregularities.

Stamatovic said his people did well also in some other towns and municipalities and would have representatives in local authorities in some eight towns and districts.

Stamatovic has been the head of the municipality since 2004,  managed to remain in the office after convincingly winning over President Aleksandar Vucic’s list.
