The Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS) warned on Monday of what it said are inappropriate statements by top state officials which have launched “an avalanche of attacks and pressure on journalists and news desks which are seriously jeopardizing their safety”.
“Instead of the public finding out why the son of the state president is in the company of men who have been prosecuted for serious acts of crime, public officials and the media under their control are retailiating and have launched a new campaign of persecution against independent journalists, accusing them of endangering him,” the NUNS statement said.
It warned of attacks against media reporting professionally. “The KRIK desk is under attack, primarily our brave colleague Bojana Pavlovic, as well as Danas daily, N1 TV and other media outlets operating professionally and in line with the code of journalists in the public interest,” it said and added that new profiles have appeared on social networks unscrupulously attacking journalists and media by supporting statements by public officials.
The NUNS called prosecutors, the police and Obmudsman to investigate what it said is an organized campaign and find whoever is giving the order to insult, humiliate and target journalists.
