Serbia's opposition leader attacked; Vucic, opposition condemn

The Sunday's attack on the leader of the opposition Movement of Free Citizens Sergej Trifunovic in Belgrade during collecting signatures for the upcoming election drew condemnations from both the opposition and President Aleksandar Vucic.

 As Petar Miletic, a member of the Movement’s leadership, told N1, a man approached Trifunovic and provoked him with questions like „who is paying for this“ and then at one point the man hit him in the face. Miletic also stated that the police, who were nearby, arrested the attacker, and that the Movement’s attorney would file charges.

Another Movement member told Nova S TV that the attacker shouted “traitor” to Trifunovic.

Serbia’s Interior Ministry said that two individuals were apprehended for disturbance of public order in Belgrade, and Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said on Monday that the criminal charges were filed against the two.

Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic condemned the attack late on Sunday.

Speaking to the pro-regime Pink TV, he said that ‘no one has the right to be violent…’ and that there is no doubt that the authorities have to change something.”

Vucic said his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) would lose power if it did not have 50 plus percent of the votes on June 21, and added that SNS would “make any political alliances with that party
